My day off

So with this being a holiday for CAVA, I just gave all the boys the day off. Well, when I say gave them, I mean I had some light catch-up work for them to do which they totally ignored me about. *sigh* Jonathan had no soccer practice (those stopped with the time change since the field has no lights), Christopher had no acting class, and I was bad and blew off bowling so I could have a down day. (yes, yes, I know, shame on me for not putting my kids first).

Now please keep in mind that I took this day as my day off since Thursday is my birthday but they are doing yearbook pictures at the Homeschool Park Day that afternoon and since Christopher is on staff and they could use extra cameras and such, I'm going to be busy there for a couple of hours. My only saving grace is that Matthew won't have soccer practice that night.

So what did I do with my day off?

• Went through all the stockpiled chips and breakfast cereals and reorganized them bringing the older stuff to the front, getting rid of the few things the kids have decided they aren't going to eat, then shifted things around to find some more space.
• Finished putting away all the groceries from this week (ok, and a few things from last week as well)
• Did a few loads of laundry
• Caught up the dishes
• Got the boys to fold the socks (not as easy as it sounds, I assure you)
• Realized that the fridge we've had for 12 days already needs to be reorganized because people are throwing things wherever (ok, didn't actually do anything about this but geez, what is up with that?)
• Got caught up with the AS/HFA curriculum Christopher and I are working on
  
• Did a little bit of reading to catch up in one of his science books
• Handed off the computer boxes in my living room to the nice FedEx guy (not much work involved here but boy did it free up tons of space in my living room)
• Spent a whole load of time working on cleaning up my desk and entering stuff into Quicken (not nearly done with this but hopefully I can keep plugging away at it and be done in a few days)
• Remembered to cook dinner
• Found a new toaster over on Craig's list for only $26 which I'll be picking up tomorrow
• Went to the AYSO board meeting and reiterated that I will NOT be doing the Referee Assistant job as well as being Webmaster and Scheduler and they WILL find someone else (any volunteers? anyone? yep, that silence is what I heard at the meeting tonight and in fact everyone who didn't have a job was asked and they all declined...gee, I wonder why)

So now I'm just trying to get Nico to go to bed so I can finally put my feet up and chill for a few minutes on my day off.

Getting stuff done

So things went really well today and I've been able to get a lot of stuff crossed off my weekend todo list. So far I've:

• Gotten caught up on all papers that needed grading and got lesson plans together for all 3 big boys and started working on some lesson plan type stuff for Nico to keep him away from monitors.
• Picked up loaner school materials for Matthew
• Fax Matthew's enrollment papers to Ocean Grove and get Jonathan's just about ready to go (just need to get his birth certificate out of it's hideyhole and then that's all ready)
• Got the quilt squares made for Cici's quilt from the board and mailed those today
• Got the Prudential life insurance stuff all signed, sealed, and mailed
• Got the second K12 computer ready to ship for when FedEx comes by tomorrow
• Shipped out a bunch of duplicate K12 materials
• Got just about caught up on the laundry
• Made the menu, played the grocery game, made the shopping list, and did the grocery shopping
• Found a better place for the boys' chorepacks
• Ordered new FLYLady calendar and other supplies from her website
• Emailed Discovery Toys manager to order new catalogs and get help in getting ready for the shows I'm doing in the next couple of weeks
• Got the boys to clean the rat cage out
• Booked my DMV appointment for Wednesday, the day before my license will expire
• Took care of sick Nico, poor baby is all stuffy with crusty eyes
• Got to the gym today
• Had a long talk with Matthew about how things need to be

So in all, I'm feeling pretty good with all that.

A day with friends

So I didn't manage to get as much done as I was wanting this weekend (I know, what else is new) but it was for very good reason. Yesterday we had soccer, in the rain (boy that was fun), and then I was over at a fellow homeschooling mom's house where she was once again bestowing her wisdom and materials upon me for Matthew. She's been homeschooling for close to 18yrs and is just a wealth of knowledge and resources and I'm very thankful that she is so free with both. Then today, Mike came over and we were visited by Jen and Luisa as well for a few hours. Now Mike brought whiskey for Mark, as usual, but Jen and Luisa brought me good chocolate and tea. We had a conversation a few weeks ago comparing our favorite chocolate places so they had to bring me some of their favorite, Dilettante, to compare with my Cocoa Bella and Teuscher's. So I guess I should give my verdict. I think for a purer chocolate truffle with just a touch of champagne taste I'm going to give the nod to Teuscher. I really like how the different flavors compliment each other and it's got more pure chocolate taste to it. The Dilatantte champagne trufle has a touch of fruit flavor mixed in with it which is good, please do not get me wrong on that, but wasn't what I was expecting. I had the mocha truflle tonight and was delighted with the taste of coffee beans in the truffle filling, very nice touch. I had two of the bittersweet chocolate truffles so allowed Mark to have one which he seemed to enjoy. His palette is a bit whiskified so I know better than to ask him to comment on the complexities of chocolate. He's lucky I graced him with a piece and he knows it. LOL

So the verdict....All three are wonderful and I have to say that it really depends more on what taste sensation you are in the mood for as to what will hit that pleasure spot in your mouth and brain at the time. The Dilattante does seem to run more towards fruit flavors, however mild, rather than the others which I like occasionally but not daily but still, I think you would have a hard time rating any of them as "better" than the others.

Now I just need to finish having my little room padded and I can lay in my stash of all three chocolates, plenty of books, and water and I'll have my own little happy place.

52:85 The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien

I last read these books back in 1991-1992, something like that. I remember enjoying them but also being put-off by the intense descriptive scenes which didn't seem to move the plot along (please, no flames on this, I was like 16 at the time, teenagers are stupid). I've moved them several times and always meant to give them another chance, especially after the movies, but there always seemed to be something new to read or worlds where I didn't remember being so bored so I kept putting it off.

Until that is, I found the LOTR curriculum and went "Wow! This is way cool! I gotta do this with Christopher!" And I'm of the mind that if my kids are reading something for school, well, since I'm their teacher I should read it too. So we are reading it together. I stay about a chapter ahead of him and then stop (which surprisingly is starting to annoy me LOL). Now that I'm enjoying it with him and reading it with better appreciation for literature, I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I can't add much to what has already been said about it by so many thousands of other people in the world except that if you tried it years ago and found it dry, try it again. Don't give up on it. It's truly worth the read. And even better, read it with someone you love and enjoy discussing it together. It just adds to the experience.

Funny conversation

I was brushing Nico's teeth tonight and got treated to yet more insights from him. First, he insists that he brushes first. This involves sucking all the toothpaste off the toothbrush and sort of swirling it around in his mouth. Then he hands it to me and says proudly "I done, all done, I done, no more". I told him he could be done brushing his teeth but that mommy still needed to brush them. He said "I done, me done, mommy more". I told him that was right, he was done but mommy needed to do more. He opened up and let me brush his teeth without a fight.

What was so neat was hearing him stringing all those words together and putting together a bunch of two word sentences and hearing his though process. I'm so thrilled for him that he's finally starting to be able to get some of this out of his head and shared with us.

Now he and Jonathan are reading together in his bed. It's been a crazy day and Nico's been earning his nickname but it's these quiet moments that help remind me it won't always be this crazy with him.

Random ramblings + pics

Halloween this year. It was taken after they had been out partying and trick-or-treating so they were pretty tired by this point.

Things are crazy right now with disenrolling Matthew from CAVA so all my energy has been there. Christopher had a bunch of school meetings today (book club and yearbook staff) so between all that, I've just been running around like a madwoman trying to get the house presentable before the teacher gets here, getting all the paperwork together, and getting kids where they need to be for the day. Of course, Mark is in SLC so I need to figure something out for dinner as well since I don't think he's going to want to cook when he gets home at 11p. LOL

Happy early Birthday to me

My in-laws are leaving for a working vacation on Sunday and are going to be gone until after Thanksgiving (we are actually all meeting up with Mark's grandparents in SD for the holiday). So with this in mind, they called me over today to pick up my presents. I stopped in on our way to Game Night with the boys. I loved the wrapping job as it was a DisneyWorld tote bag that is way cool. Inside I found the new Tinkerbell movie (which I knew about), Monk season 6 (woo-hoo), and the coolest bundt pan! This is just a beautiful pan where the top is shaped like Christmas trees with trains around the bottom. Soooo adorable! I can see the boys and I having a lot of fun with it this coming holiday season and for many to come.


And in other news, it looks like Matthew is starting to hit puberty. Yikes! Christopher only started showing the same signs 18mos ago and here is Matthew starting already. That is soooo not fair!!!

Cici update - MRI results

Her mom published this on her blog. I'll likely stop posting her updates here but encourage everyone to visit her blog and keep this family in your thoughts and prayers.

Update 11:

Some other celebrations:
1. Cici is alive, still with us, and our family is intact, strong, and happy.
2. The support and thoughts that have come from around the world, from people that we don't even know have lifted us up - and help us remember to put our faith in humanity - we are, first and foremost, all human beings. We are forever grateful.

The MRI results showed diffuse brain injury in all parts of her brain. Parts of her brain are damaged due to the lack of oxygen she suffered while choking and in the time afterwards. This was not the worst news we could have gotten, but it was far from the best. What does this result mean for her and us? We don't know. We may not know for a while yet - maybe months. So, once again, we are in a waiting mode - we wait for her to recover and see what she can do, and what pathways in her brain she is able to reconnect or make alternative routes to, and what neurons she can "retrain" to do other functions. We don't yet know what the worst case scenario is and we don't yet know what the best case scenario is. We do know where we're starting from, however, and that's an answer in itself.

So, in a few short moments, and over the course of this past week, our entire lives have changed. This could have happened to anyone, she choked on a cracker eaten hours before and lodged in her throat waiting to move and block her airway, or a piece of canned soft fruit with us standing right there. 911 was called within 30 seconds or less after I figured out I couldn't get it out, and the ambulance arrived within minutes, maybe less. She was airlifted very quickly and got the best case possible, we were trained in infant CPR and did everything I could before the ambulance got there. We've gone from not knowing if she would survive at all to now knowing the full extent of her injuries, and while they are severe, she is alive! She is recovering! We don't know what her end state is going to be - we're going to have to wait and do everything we can to get her the best care possible.

Physically, she looks better - the swelling has gone down, and she looks more like herself. She is moving in response to stimuli, and although her movements seem reflexive rather than purposeful, she is still responding. She is able to open her eyes a bit, although is not alert. Her blood pressure is down (although goes up when she is agitated), and is coughing and gagging, good signs reflexively, as she tries to clear her lungs. She is getting nutrition, both through her IV and also directly to her stomach. The next steps are to slowly wean her from the ventilator and see if she can breathe on her own, and tolerate breathing without a breathing tube. Then, we'll see if she gets her suck/eat reflex back as well, both are huge victories, if we can get her there.

It has been a difficult week. We are hanging in there, and strangely feel a relief in knowing what challenges may be ahead of us. Through a strange (and cosmic?) connection through one of Matt's coworkers, we've met one of the doctors at the Special Care Clinic here at Children's (like PCP's for kids with special needs) and she talked with us for a long time last night, on her own time. We've now been thrust into the world of social security disability and various forms of medicaid. We are finding out how much support is out there for her and us, and it is plentiful. We are finding out what types of therapy and care she may need in the future, and preparing to adjust our lives.

There is no question. Our life is different now forever. It will be different for everyone in our family. We will have an extraordinary family. We have a perspective that few families gain. Penny and Max will learn a level of patience, tolerance and compassion that few kids learn. They will become extraordinary people because of this. Cici will have her twin sister there for her forever, and her big brother to protect her. The twin bond is strong, and she may recover more because of it. We will be there to make sure that all of our kids get the care and attention they need. We are committed to making sure they are all taken care of forever.

I am however, sad that Amendment 51 did not pass in Colorado, it means more now than ever.

So. Here we are. A new challenge for our lives, and we are committed to making our family happy and loving, and not bitter and upset. We want to be the family that serves as a source of inspiration, perspective and compassion to others. Thanks to our support network, we celebrate our lives, celebrate that we are all here, and must focus on the work we have ahead of us.

52:84 Swallowing Darkness by Laurell K. Hamilton

The latest book in the Meredith Gentry series. The last couple have all been taking place over the course of just a few days and this one was no exception. Everyone is fighting over Merry or trying to kill her and the plot thickens further with Faerie crowning her Queen of different courts and now she fights not only for herself and the men she loves, but the twins she is pregnant with.

A lot less sex in this one and a whole lot more plot stuff going on. It ends on a happier note but with Andais and Taranis still technically in charge of their respective kingdoms, I'm sure the plot will thicken once again and pull Merry back in. I can't wait to see how.

Insights into a Toddler Mind

I'm thinking I should make this a series as it's really fascinating me now that he's getting so much clearer to understand.

Just a few minutes ago, he was arguing with Matthew because he wanted to play on my computer where Matthew was working. I came in to break it up and Matthew told me that we needed to buy Wow-Wow Wubzy on DVD so Nico could watch that and let us work (of course, this goes totally against my philosophies and is something I'm trying to get totally away from so I'm proud that I didn't immediately give Matthew the glare of death). Nico hears this, screams "Yeah!", and runs to the front door, grabs my keys and looks at me expectantly. It took a few seconds for it dawn on me that he liked this idea and so therefore thought we must be leaving right now to make it happen. Of course, when one is the absolute ruler of the galaxy and knows it, why shouldn't your every wish be obeyed in this manner.

I'm sorry to report that his loyal minions did not obey and decided to see if it was on Noggin instead. It wasn't but he has agreed to let us live so long as we do not disturb his enjoyment of Pinky-Dinky Doo.

So much going on

Tons of stuff happening over here as always. This weekend is supposed to be the last weekend of soccer but I'm not sure since we were rained out last weekend (but I'm hoping!). We've decided to take the plunge and remove Matthew and Jonathan from CAVA. For full details, check out the Davis Academy blog. I'm super thrilled at this prospect tho and truly believe it will be for the best.

Nico is talking more now and we are hearing new "words" almost daily now which is fabulous. We now have his three big brothers "Raah" (Christopher), "Maah.....you" (Matthew, and the you is still optional at the end LOL), and "Non" (Jonathan). It's really cute hearing him say their names. Yesterday I was eating some Jelly Beans and he started grabbing the green ones and ran into the other room crying "Non, Non" since as far as he's concerned, if it's green, it's Jonathan's. LOL Then he snatched the blue ones for himself and when I tried to eat one cried "No, Mine! Mommy" and he handed me the purple ones.

As I was typing this, he came up to me upset and said "Non, outide. In!" (Jonathan's outside, he needs to come in). Just amazing now that he's finding the words the ideas he has that we can finally understand. I'm sure this last year has been so frustrating for him and I'm so glad that while we still have a long way to go in his language development, he is now finding the words to express more complex ideas to us. I'm so curious as to what goes on in his head somedays.

This is a quieter week around the house and I'm hoping with the pressure off of Matthew, we can find some peace and time to get caught up on other things. And there are LOTS of things to catch up on. LOL

52:83 The Marvelous Land of Oz by L. Frank Baum

The 2nd book in the Oz series. The boys absolutely loved it and came running out with the 3rd book as soon as I'd finished reading this one to them. A lovely adventure by all means and made even better by reading it with a little one on each side. I had been warned by a few people to be careful how they may react to the finding of Ozma and the transformation of Tip but apparently they had been glancing at the back of the book when I wasn't looking and they were totally fine with the whole thing. I think they understand that Old Mombi isn't laying in wait to transform them any time soon. LOL

But really, it was a lovely book and the boys are looking forward to continuing the series. I was hoping to start on the "Little House" books next as we need to do that for school but I've been outvoted. LOL Hmmm....maybe if we read the third book quickly enough, they won't have a choice but to do the Little House books while they wait for their Hannukah book bags to give them a few more.

Cici update

She had her MRI yesterday and her parents are awaiting the results today. Here's the latest update from her mom (obviously before they got her in for the MRI):

Update 10
No MRI yet. It got delayed/overbooked. It's nervewracking, all the waiting, and we're really realistically expecting brain damage, we just don't know how much. And we realize the MRI will show us a starting point and we'll have to see how her amazing baby brain can reconnect and repair itself. She's definitely showing some signs of brain damage with her reflexive movements. We're having a difficult day mulling all of the possibilities, but we do know that we will get her anything she needs and will get her the best care possible. She will have us and her siblings committed to her. I know we may not have our "old Cici" back, but we will have different Cici and we love her and help her no matter what. She's very special.

So tired today

The last couple of days things have just gone wrong when it comes to me getting much sleep. It's not anyone's fault but the end result is the same in that I'm just exhausted and now I need to get out of the cycle of over-caffeinate to stay up and moving and then not being able to sleep at night as a result. The rainy, gray weather hasn't been helping with my energy level either but it will get better I'm confidant and the best news is that even as tired as I am, I've been keeping my cool with things rather than blowing up over the little things. Definitely a big step for me as a person and mother.

In another effort to stimulate my brain and get some energy going (or should I say another failed attempt LOL) I went through the two 1001 book lists to see what changed for me personally in terms of how many I've read and have sitting in the house to read between the two and also to look for any little clues of what changed (I wasn't about to use the brain power to go through and find the 280+ books that changed thank you LOL). It looks like the big thing was that in the first list they would have several books by the same author and that struck me as the biggest change is that they seemed to have gone in and really paired that down which I think is good since odds are if you read the couple that are on the list and like them, you'll likely go out and track down more stuff by that person and by taking some of the books that aren't as strong and adding in new authors, you are expanding the list even further and therefore expanding what people will read even further. Always a good thing in my opnion.

Not a big change in those that I've read off the list but definitely a change in what I owned to read and again, I think a big part of that is the cutting down of books by a single author since I bought many of those in complete editions but that's ok. I'll read it all anyway. :)

Latest on Cici

Here are the last couple of updates:
Update7
Some steps back today. Very swollen, lungs have fluid, may need to back on oscillator. EEG hooked up to look for seizures, but MRI will likely be monday, after we get breathing under control. Almost off blood pressure meds though. Very stressful, thank everyone for their support. Anyone is welcome at anytime to visit, even if it has to be short. We sometimes have to limit people in the room, especially on bad days. Right now we see this is going to be a very long process, and we don't even know what we're dealing with yet.

Update 8
Made it through another day! They replaced her breathing tube (which she did NOT handle well) but has a better seal so the ventilator can work better. So she didn't the old ventilator back after all, which is great. The fluid in her lungs looks better and the diuretics they are giving her are working too, so she is starting to shed some of the excess fluid in her tissues (which is a LOT). She is OFF all blood pressure meds! Now she is on sedatives and pain meds, antibiotics, anti-seizure. EEG shows no seizure activity, but cannot be read for much else, we'll have to wait for the MRI. They're starting to move her from side to side a bit which is tricky with her. So, that's today overall not as bad as I thought once the setbacks were sorted out. She's just very sensitive to any changes in vent/med settings so they've learned to go slow!




If anyone who reads this is on Facebook, please keep checking on my status as I frequently link to the group that was started to pray for Cici. Her mom checks in there and it really helps to buoy her when she sees how many are praying for her little girl.

I found this one a little less compelling and the secondary characters less interesting this time. It really felt like they were there to play their part and there was no other fleshing them out or backstory to them except what was needed for the story to proceed. A bit of a disappointing effort this time.

Taking the plunge - nablopomo

So I'm giving it a try this year. I know this last month I just barely averaged a post a day but generally I've been doing pretty well keeping up with my blog this year so I'm going to try for the challenge of making sure that I post at least once every day for the entire month. My biggest personal challenge for this is going to be posting while we are on vacation later this month. OTOH, I do plan on actually doing a full "Week in your life" series this coming week since this last week got sidetracked.

Quick Cici update

We had a good night overall. She is taking baby steps towards improving. She was able to wean off one of the blood pressure meds. They've lowered the "strength" of the oscillator (heavy duty ventilator) and they think they'll be able to a "regular" ventilator later today. With that, they'll be able to start the brain tests, which is where we need the prayers for a miracle, we don't know what they'll find and how much damage has been done to her poor little brain. We are trying to prepare ourselves for the worst while hoping for the best. Please let youth be on our side here.

We made it through another day! Today she switched to a regular ventilator, which is a good move. On this vent she'll be able to get an MRI, CT scan and EEG. These tests make me terribly nervous, and my mind goes through all of the possibilities often. We had Penny and Max here today and brought something of Penny's for Cici to smell/touch. It was difficult to see Penny next to Cici today - a reminder of just how sick Cici is. Overall a good day, but I'm very nervous about tomorrow.



The boys had a fun day carving pumpkins and getting tons of candy. Nico really got into the whole "stand there, look cute, try to say trick-or-treat, get loot" thing and was dragging us from house to house. I'll post a couple of pics tomorrow.
