The story of a troubled teen with telekinetic powers and an overbearing, religious fanatic of a mother. My understanding is that this was his first novel and you can see his talent clearly in it but it also shows through as raw and rough around the edges. The tale has his famous elements of everything being utterly believable except for that one twist (in this case, the telekinesis). We've all seen from some angle the girl who is constantly tormented and who in that case wouldn't long for revenge. I think it loses some of it's power towards the later part when he is trying to describe all the horror that she is wrecking but it comes back at the very end in the scene between Sue and Carrie as Carrie lays dying. Not a bad book, but really, if you've seen the movie you can actually skip reading this one (and I don't often say that). The ending is more powerful in the book but there isn't enough difference and it's not that great a book to make it worth it.
