A post-apocalyptic tale set sometime after normal government in North America has been destroyed andPublish Post the continent has been separated into 13 districts which are ruled by The Capitol. The districts have rebelled and were crushed with District 13 being totally destroyed. Now the other 12 must supply 2 tributes each year (1 boy, 1 girl) for The Hunger Games. A brutal game in which there can be only one survivor put on for the amusement of those living at The Capitol and broadcast to the Districts as a reminder of the price for rebellion. The tributes are chosen by lottery on a day called The Reaping from among children age 12-17. Your name is put in once for each year you have been eligible to be drawn but you can buy food and other supplies for entering your name additional times.

Katniss has been supporting her family in this manner and through illegal hunting since her father died when she was 11. She has refused to let her younger sister take any of the risks that might garner her extra chances in The Reaping so it comes as a shock when on Prim's first Reaping Day with only one slip her name is drawn. Katniss stands up to volunteer to take her place in the Hunger Games. She and the boy from District 12, Peeta, head to the Capitol to try and survive in the most deadly game of all.

Fast paced, simply written but dynamic for the simplicity. The author doesn't over complicate things by words or unnecessary plot twists. It's all out there from pretty early on and we are left simply following the characters as they see how things play out. As soon as I finished this one I had the second book in my hands as I had to see where things went next.
